What is packaging compliance?
Packaging Compliance is a set of regulations that aims to reduce the amount of packaging waste going to UK landfill. It encourages companies to use less packaging in the first place, and to recycle more of the packaging that passes through their business.
Companies which own or handle packaging need to be registered, and they must contribute towards the cost of recycling their share. They do this by buying recycling certificates called PRNs, or Packaging Recovery Notes, to show that their fair share of any packaging owned or handled has been recycled. This is something we help you with.
How Does packaging compliance affect your business?
Your business achieves packaging compliance when it meets the requirements of The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations. You’ll need to take action if you meet these two criteria:
- Turnover of £2m per year
- Own or handle over 50 tonnes of packaging per year
Not sure what 50 tonnes looks like?
- 5 pallets of packed goods per day
- 1 articulated lorry load of goods per week

At The GBN, we can help your business to meet its legal obligations through our packaging compliance schemes: Pennine-Pack, Ethical Compliance and Pennine-Pack Northern Ireland.
